7 member Delhi Police Crime Branch’s special team to probe Parliament scuffle: Sources

The investigation into the case against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for allegedly assaulting and injuring BJP MPs during a scuffle in the Parliament premises will be handled by the Delhi Police Crime Branch’s Interstate Cell (ISC) Unit in Chanakyapuri, sources told India Today TV.

The Delhi Police filed an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, charging him with “physical assault and incitement” during the protest over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark on Dr BR Ambedkar, news agency PTI reported.

Earlier on Friday, the case was transferred from the Parliament Street Police Station to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police.

The case involved two BJP MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, who sustained injuries during a ruckus in the Parliament. Both were admitted to RML Hospital for treatment. The BJP alleged that Rahul Gandhi pushed them in an attempt to get into the House.

The Congress, however, blamed the BJP for the commotion, claiming that members of the saffron party pushed party Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, after which he sustained injuries to his knee. Rahul Gandhi clapped back on BJP’s accusations, saying that he was stopped from going inside the Parliament by stick-wielding BJP MPs.

The Crime Branch formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday night. The seven-member team includes two Assistant Commissioners of Police, two Inspectors, and three Sub-Inspectors. The team will report directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Sources indicated that the Parliament administration has been approached to provide CCTV footage of the incident. Officials confirmed that the FIR and investigation documents related to the case are yet to be handed over to the Crime Branch. This process is expected to be completed soon.

Complaints were filed by both sides. BJP representatives lodged a written complaint on Thursday night, following which an FIR was registered. A delegation from the Congress Party also visited the police station and filed a counter-complaint. A senior police official said, “The Congress complaint is under legal examination.”
