Rashmika Mandanna fears being lifted. Ahead of the film’s release, the Pushpa 2 actor had revealed how shooting for the Peelings song was a challenge given her fear. In a social media post, Mandanna credited co-actor Allu Arjun for helping her overcome the fear. “I promise you I couldn’t have gotten over my fear of being lifted if it wasn’t for @alluarjun sir. And sir knows it! and trust me, it was hard af but mad fun doing this song with sir!” she wrote.
What is this fear all about?
Dr Rajesh Kumar, senior consultant psychiatrist, Udgam, (a mental health care and rehabilitation centre), New Delhi, explained that the fear of being lifted is an “anxiety response” that springs from feelings of vulnerability, loss of control, and sometimes past traumatic experiences. “The fear includes not just the physical act of being lifted but also the emotional and psychological distress associated with it. This fear sometimes can come from a past incident of trauma such as falling or can be part of a larger fear of heights — acrophobia — or perhaps falling or basophobia. This may be a part of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) related to such incidents,” elaborated Dr Kumar.
According to the expert, one could picture oneself falling or being injured while being lifted, thus provoking one’s imagination to go beyond the threshold of realistic thinking. “Thus, generally, fears can escalate by going into a full-blown catastrophising mode that brings with it the bodily syndrome of the acute stress response: heartbeat increase, shortness of breath, dryness of throat, tingling or hot and cold sensation in the body, nausea or dizzy feelings. Any such overwhelming fear or emotional turmoil makes mundane activities — for instance, getting on an elevator or being hoisted — simply unbearable,” said Dr Kumar.
What can help?
It takes a range of psychological techniques combined with practicality to break this fear. “Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT is one of the best therapies for specific phobia. CBT helps individuals to challenge their irrational thoughts, like asserting that being lifted is dangerous by nature and shunting it with more realistic perspectives. The individual learns how to manage their fear through this reframing,” said Dr Kumar.
Gradual exposure therapy is vital for helping the person overcome the fear along with CBT. “Initially, an individual is exposed to some form of lifting experience that they feel isn’t so much anxiety-inducing, gradually increasing in intensity. Successful exposure after exposure helps the person relax and gradually gain more confidence for such situations,” explained Dr Kumar.
The physiological symptoms like a rapid heartbeat or dizziness can be “efficiently countered and managed using techniques like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness.” “Such management calms the nervous system, thus reduces physical symptoms of fear, and teaches an individual to remain grounded in the present moment,” said Dr Kumar.

Eventually, Dr Kumar noted that it is a question of “replacing fear with trust” when it comes to overcoming the dread of being lifted; trust in the safety measures in place and in one’s ability to manage the emotional response. “With appropriate therapy and necessary support, individuals can regain control over their anxiety and face these situations with confidence,” said Dr Kumar.
